Chevrolet will expand its EV lineup in fall 2023 to include the Equinox EV, an affordable, functional compact electric SUV. The Equinox EV, which will be launched with both fleet and retail versions, including LT and RS trims, will leverage GM’s Ultium Platform. The first images of this new model show off its sleek exterior and futuristic interior, which are a far cry from the current gas-powered Equinox. Chevy claims that it will have a starting price of around $30,000 and that it will offer LT and RS trim levels.
“The Equinox has always played an important role for Chevrolet as the second-highest selling brand nameplate,” said Steve Hill, Chevrolet vice president. “Providing an affordable EV option in the industry’s highest volume segment proves Chevy is going to make EVs available to everyone.”
The Equinox EV will use one of GM’s Ultium batteries. The Ultium family includes battery packs ranging from 50 kwh to about 200 kwh, with motor combinations ranging from 235 hp to 1,000 hp. GM has said that applications such as this would offer front- or all-wheel drive. The red Equinox EV in these photos appears to be an RS model, while the silver vehicle could be an LT or Premier. Both feature large display screens inside, but the RS appears to have different interior trim including red upholstery and carbon-fiber-look trim.
The Equinox likely won’t be the lowest-priced of GM’s new EVs. More affordable models below that and based on the Ultium platform are due around the middle of the decade, executives have hinted, including a successor to the Bolt EV, which is currently in a production pause as GM struggles to procure enough batteries to fix recalled Bolt EVs. That said, with interests piqued from both the GMC Hummer EV and Chevrolet Silverado EV. Chevy claims that it will have a starting price of around $30,000 and that it will offer LT and RS trim levels.
