Japanese coachbuilder Mitsuoka has released its first SUV, the Buddy, which is based on the Toyota RAV4, but rebodied with some American influence. Mitsuoka is noted for building unique cars with unconventional styling, some of which are modern while others imitate the look of American, European and particularly British retro cars of the 1950s and 1960s. Mitsuoka Motors is also the principal distributor of retro-classic TD2000 roadster in Japan. It is primarily a custom design coachbuilder, taking production cars, like the Nissan March, and replacing various aspects of the bodywork with its own customizations. It has also produced a sports car, the Orochi.
For the Mitsuoka Buddy, it looks like Mitsuoka referenced the Chevrolet K5 Blazer from the 80s, and the end result looks rather fetching. To create the Buddy, the company took a bog-standard RAV4 and kept all the Japanese-market mechanical bits intact. As such, customers can choose from a 2.0 litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder with 171 PS (169 hp) and 207 Nm of torque, or a 2.5 litre hybrid with 178 PS (176 hp) and 221 Nm. The RAV4’s stock face is ripped out and replaced with a K5 Blazer-inspired front end. This includes a large grid-style grille, which is flanked by stacked rectangular headlamps. There’s also a redesigned bonnet to give the Buddy a shark-nose look.
