Honda is expanding its Civic Type R range with the addition of two new variants, Limited Edition and Sport Line. Developed with track performance as its core focus, the new 2022 Honda Civic Type R Limited Edition has been designed and engineered to be the most dynamic front wheel drive hatchback available. With new lightweight components and a stripped-back, driver-focused interior, this is the most extreme version of the iconic Civic Type R ever made. Just 100 will be built for Europe, each benefitting from the standard Civic Type R’s outstanding driving dynamics and performance. To reflect its extrovert nature, an exclusive new colour, ‘Sunlight Yellow’, is introduced for the Honda Civic Type R Limited Edition, along with a dark chrome Civic badge on the back. With the addition of contrasting gloss black paint on the roof, wing mirrors and intake vent on the bonnet, the bold colour scheme reflects Honda’s sporting heritage and ensures the Limited Edition stands out as a unique proposition in the performance hatchback segment.
In a testament to Honda Type R engineers’ attention to detail, a small reduction in front downforce resulting from the new larger grille opening was countered by a redesigned front under-bumper air dam, which is now deeper and includes new ribbed sections on each end to divert air back onto the spoiler. The suspension for the 2022 Civic Type R has also been updated for more responsive handling, resulting in sharper steering and better cornering. For improved brake performance, the updated Civic Type R now features an upgraded braking system of two-piece floating front brake discs and new brake pads to improve thermal efficiency and reduce brake fade during high intensity driving. The front bumper has been revised with a smoother design, while the lower fog light surrounds feature a new symmetrical design incorporating smooth surfaces and sleek styling blades. Redesigned full LED headlight clusters and daytime running lights complete the cleaner styling direction that features across the Civic range, with a new larger air intake and thinner grille beam that deliver a 13% larger opening.
The new Limited Edition model retains the Type R’s powerful 2.0-litre VTEC Turbo engine. Peak power output is 320PS at 6,500rpm while peak torque is 400Nm from 2,500rpm to 4,500rpm. It can also achieve 0-62mph in 5.7 seconds. Powering Type R trims is a turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder producing 180 horsepower at 6,000 rpm (SAE net) and 177 lb.-ft. of torque at 1,700 to 4,500 rpm (SAE net) on 87 octane gasoline. Multiple measures contribute to improved fuel economy ratings, including new more efficient turbo plumbing and the addition of Variable Timing and lift Electronic Control (VTEC®) to the exhaust valves. The CVT for the 1.5-liter turbo features improved torque converter performance, while also adopting revised Step-Shift programming. The transmission has been revised for an even sportier feel with improved shift rigidity and shorter shift throws. A new dual-mass flywheel helps reduce noise and vibration transmitted through the drivetrain.
The Limited Edition features lightweight flow-formed 20” forged BBS alloy wheels with Michelin Cup 2 tyres, which are designed for high-speed track driving but still deliver exceptional on-road performance. Modified dampers optimise this new wheel and tyre combination and recalibration of the EPAS offers maximum control and feedback. The Civic Type R Limited Edition’s interior echoes sporting bloodline. Featuring the iconic red bucket seats, each model features a plaque marking the build number of the car.
