The seven-passenger 2022 Rivian R1S sport-utility vehicle will be the second production vehicle from Rivian, a new electric-vehicle manufacturer based in Michigan. Rivian is an American electric vehicle automaker and automotive technology company founded in 2009. Rivian is building an electric sport utility vehicle (SUV) and pickup truck on a “skateboard” platform that can support future vehicles or be adopted by other companies. These vehicles are designed for both on-road and off-road driving. An electric van is also being built, and all three vehicles are slated to be delivered to customers in 2021. The company plans to build an exclusive charging network in the United States and Canada. Rivian is based in Irvine, California, with its manufacturing plant in Normal, Illinois, and other facilities in Plymouth, Michigan; Palo Alto, California; Carson, California; Vancouver, British Columbia, and Woking, England.
The R1S and the Rivian brand itself are new entrants in the sport-utility vehicle (SUV) marketplace. The R1S is a sport utility vehicle version of the first Rivian platform to reach production. Because of a shared electric chassis, the R1S design was aiming, as of 2018, to have 91% shared components with the R1T. The chassis includes braking, suspension, and cooling systems with a battery in the center. Rivian’s relatively-flat, low-center-of-gravity chassis is a typical electric vehicle skateboard, which enables straightforward customization for various body types that might be placed above it. The R1S vehicle will be offered in two trims, both of which are offered with the same 135-kWh-pack size. The Adventure trim in the R1S SUV starts at $75,500, while the Explore package has a base price of $70,000. Rivian intends to begin deliveries of the Adventure and Explore packages in January 2022.

The 2022 R1S shares its battery pack, powertrains, much of its styling, and many of its specs with its R1T pickup sibling. With up to 800-hp on tap, the R1S boasts a claimed zero-to-60-mph time of 3.0 seconds. The Rivian platform includes battery pack, drive units, suspension, thermal and lower body structure. These systems have been elegantly packaged to preser ve cabin space for occupants and gear while providing a low center of gravity for more confident driving.The R1S has an electric motor at each wheel, giving it all-wheel drive and impressive off-road capability. All models will ship with adjustable air suspension at launch and can vary their ground clearance from eight to 14.5 inches. Rivian will eventually offer two different battery packs on the R1S, but the Launch Edition comes with a 135-kWh pack. Rivian says this pack should deliver around 300 miles of driving range. A larger, 180-kWh battery pack will be available as an option starting in 2022 and it will come with a claimed driving range of about 400 miles. The EPA estimates that the R1S SUV will deliver 73 MPGe city, 65 MPGe highway, and 69 MPGe combined.
