Rivian is an American electric vehicle automaker and automotive technology company founded in 2009. Rivian is building an electric sport utility vehicle (SUV) and pickup truck on a “skateboard” platform that can support future vehicles or be adapted by other companies. The Rivian R1T is an all-electric pickup truck and it promises 300 miles of driving range and lightning-quick acceleration. At 215.6 inches long, the crew-cab-only R1T splits the difference in size between mid-size pickups such as the Ford Ranger and full-size trucks such as the Ram 1500. The R1T is an all-new model from Rivian, and it’ll start being delivered to customers by the end of 2021. It kicks off with a Launch Edition that starts at $74,145, but a more affordable Explore trim level is also offered.
Structures made from aluminum alloy, ultra high-strength steel and carbon fiber are designed for enhanced safety. 2022 Rivian R1T platform’s low center of gravity helps prevent rollover and keeps you confidently planted. To help improve safety further, a range of driver assistance features are standard on every Rivian vehicle. Rivian’s powertrain, thermal system and frame structure enable the R1T to tow up to 11,000 lbs in all variants. When towing at full capacity, you can expect around a 50% reduction in range. The Rivian platform includes our battery pack, drive units, suspension, thermal and lower body structure. These systems have been elegantly packaged to preserve cabin space for occupants and gear while providing a low center of gravity for more confident driving.
Active damping monitors the road and driver inputs every 5 milliseconds to adjust your suspension. Better for comfort and steering response, damping rates are variable so you can go stiffer for hugging the road, or softer for absorbing impact on uneven terrain. Independent air suspension allows for 6.5 inches of vertical adjustment — as low as 7.9 inches or as high as 14.4 inches — to optimize your vehicle’s ride height for improved handling, comfort, aerodynamics and stability with varying payloads. Automatic ride-height leveling also balances your vehicle for better handling when towing heavy loads. For maximum efficiency and range, select a lower ride height. This allows the R1T to do what Rivian calls a Tank Turn, which sets the electric motors to rotate the left wheels in the opposite direction of the right ones to spin the truck on its axis.
Rivian quad-motor drive is comprised of two dual-motor drive units — one for the front axle, another for the rear. The quad-motor drive is identical across all available vehicles. Four motors deliver instant power and independently adjust torque at each wheel for precise traction control in all conditions. Quad-motors offer substantially better torque control than locking differentials, and they’re instantly adjustable for any condition.
Powering the front axle is a compact 415 horsepower unit with 413 ft lbs. of torque. In the rear, a higher torque derivative delivers 420 horsepower and 495 ft lbs. of torque. Together, they provide exceptional efficiency and vehicle performance in both on-road and off-road conditions.
2022 Rivian R1T battery packs are engineered and tested for extreme hot and cold temperatures. Optimized thermal control allows towing of up to 11,000 lbs on steep grades, high-power DC fast charging at over 200kW for sustained periods to ensure the shortest possible charging times and controlled cell temperatures to enhance battery performance and extend driving range. Our packs are also designed for long life with a smart battery management system built on Rivian’s proprietary control algorithms. The system is designed to adapt and optimize performance based on charging habits, driving behaviors and climate conditions.
While all Rivian vehicles come with the exact same quad-motor drive delivering outstanding performance in all conditions, the tires you choose play an important role in the handling, capability and efficiency of your vehicle. In partnership with Pirelli, Rivian developed three unique tire variants specifically for our vehicles, each one meant to accentuate different aspects of driving. Drive through 3 feet of water. Rock crawl at a 100% grade. Traverse just about any terrain with 14 inches of ground clearance. With a 0-60 mph time in as quick as 3 seconds depending on your tire selection, it also delivers the on-road handling of a sports car.
