Land Rover’s smallest SUV is also one of its most attractive. The Evoque is still a Land Rover, meaning it can tackle challenging off-road situations if asked. We suspect snow and the occasional dirt road are all most Evoques will encounter, but it’s nice to know the hardware is there if you need it. New this year is the P300 HST with a more powerful 2.0-liter turbocharged engine making 296 horsepower. Inspired by the Range Rover Sport HST, this mini-version in Evoque form includes a host of standard luxury features and a 48-volt mild-hybrid powertrain. All other Evoques are designated P250, meaning they employ a 246-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. All-wheel drive is standard across the lineup. The 2022 Range Rover Evoque has a style stranglehold on its subcompact luxury SUV competitors, but its charms fall victim to practical downfalls such as its puny cargo area and snug rear-seat space.
Accompanying the Evoque’s standard all-wheel drive is Land Rover’s Terrain Response 2 system that allows the driver to select from various modes based on the terrain. Choices include Rock Crawl, General Driving, Mud and Ruts, Sand, and Grass, Gravel, Snow. Electronic traction control, stability control, and hill descent control also make the cut. New standard features for 2022 include heated front seats, keyless entry, power tailgate, and wireless smartphone charging with signal booster. Standard driver assists include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, a driver monitor, front and rear parking sensors, and a rear backup camera. Additional systems such as blind-spot monitoring are available as part of an extra-cost package. Looking to the exterior, the Evoque S employs LED headlights and taillights, plus rear foglights, power-folding heated side mirrors with auto-dimming driver’s mirror, and rain-sensing wipers. A body-colored roof, automatic headlights, rear wiper washer, rear spoiler, and deployable flush door handles round out the Evoque’s noteworthy items.
Basic infotainment features include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, SiriusXM, Bluetooth streaming, and Land Rover’s InControl Remote app. A 10-inch touchscreen allows easy control of all media, as well as the standard navigation system. Controls for the climate, heated seats, and rear defrost are handled via a set of analog dials and buttons, which some may prefer to the optional and more complicated touchscreen setup on the Touch Pro Duo. Inside the Evoque’s cabin are heated 12-way power-adjustable front seats with lumbar support, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and automatic two-zone climate control with solar and mist sensing. The rear-seat area includes air vents and a 40/20/40 split-folding seatback providing easy access to the cargo area. Rather than forcing buyers into a more expensive trim just to get one or two features they really want, Land Rover offers the Evoque S with numerous options.
The Dynamic Handling Pack brings an adaptive suspension and red brake calipers. At the same time, the Convenience Pack includes a power-adjustable steering column, the Activity Key wristband (which acts like a key fob you can wear), and a power gesture rear liftgate. The Technology Pack adds a camera-operated rearview mirror, head-up display, the dual touchscreen Touch Pro Duo, and an interactive driver display. The Cold Climate Pack brings heating elements for the washer nozzles, windshield, steering wheel, and headlight power washers. Other options include driver’s memory (driver’s seat, mirrors, and steering wheel), heated rear seats, auto high-beam headlights, two upgraded Meridian sound systems, configurable ambient lighting, upgraded interior upholstery and materials, plus fixed or sliding panoramic roof options.
